Fall's Gold

1

Bracelet

Sweater: a gift, vintage via Etsy
Skirt: thrifted Spiegel
Bracelet: vintage Freirich
Bag: Tignanello via eBay
Shoes: thrifted Cappagallo

This sweater was a birthday gift from my friends Emily and Ani, who saw it in my Etsy favorites. And of course I don’t remember the name of the shop because I removed the item from my favorites after it sold. I need to stop doing that. But I don’t like looking at things I desire that are sold out. There should be a way to sort your favorites so the sold items are saved but you don’t have to look at them mixed in with the others.

Anyway...I decided to try “mixing metals” a little bit with this outfit, too, by wearing this gold bracelet that belonged to my great aunt with a silver bag and my white gold engagement ring and wedding band (well, I wear those every day obviously). I’m kind of lame at accessorizing in general, but I liked how the jewelry and bag looked together and with this outfit.

Neon Plaid

Sweater: thrifted Moda International
Skirt: thrifted Rampage
Tights: Hue
Shoes: thrifted Cappagallo
Lipstick: Revlon Blackberry

This skirt’s colorful stripes on black always make me think of neon signs in the city at night or a Lite-Brite. I wore it Saturday night to go haunted house hopping with our neighbors, who should be tour guides for the L.A. area because they know about every cool thing to do at every time of the year.

The best presentation we saw was Boney Island, which I was told is put on by a producer of The Simpsons. It’s in Sherman Oaks and free and amazing. This guy’s yard is filled with Disneyland-caliber animatronic skeletons, singing jack-o-lanterns, topiaries with blinking eyes and joke-cracking bats, plus there’s a water show choreographed to Halloween and classical music.

Head to Cognac

Dress: Forever 21
Belt: thrifted
Bag: American Vintage
Shoes: Miz Mooz via Nordstrom Rack
Lipstick: Revlon Love That Red

I just bought these flats and they’re cute and comfortable, but I feel kind of unbalanced when I wear them (or my cognac heels) because they’re not dark enough to balance out my hair. Which is weird because I love wearing red shoes. But I guess it’s that they’re a shade of brown that’s a lot lighter than my hair. Maybe I’m crazy. At least my navy belt balances out the black-brown on my head.

Fluffy, Fuzzy

Sweater: Nordstrom Rack
Skirt: Cynthia Steffe
Shoes: Aura by Lodi via Buffalo Exchange
Lipstick: Revlon Certainly Red

Last Sunday I found this short-sleeved sweater at Nordstrom Rack in Pasadena and had to buy it in this color and navy blue. It’s kind of hard to tell from the photo, but it has a cute fluffy texture and a sort of scalloped pattern. It’s from the Nordstrom’s Frenchi label, and I always like anything Frenchi or from that label Susina they sometimes carry.

These fuzzy leopard-print shoes I hadn’t worn before either...but they are SO comfortable. I don’t own many “nice” shoes (as in shoes that cost more than $25 new), but I looked up the brand of these shoes online and it’s a Spanish company that sells shoes for the equivalent of about US$180 per pair, so I guess they’re pretty high quality. I found them at Buffalo Exchange in Santa Monica when I went there with Natasha one day after work.

Yes, Pleats

Sweater: thrifted Urban Outfitters
Skirt: J. Crew hand-me-down from my aunt
Bag: American Vintage
Shoes: Urban Outfitters
Lipstick: Revlon Love That Red

When in doubt, I put on a pleated skirt. I wore pleated uniform skirts to school for eight years, and they’ve always felt easy and comfortable. I used to prefer uniform days to free dress days, actually...I didn’t exactly have cool regular clothes, but I loved mixing and matching the school uniform components (pullover sweater or cardigan?) with tights, my plain canvas shoes from Mervyn’s and Goody hair accessories. I still have some plastic dragonfly baby barrettes from the ’90s, but they won’t stay in my short hair.

I also remember getting scolded in a super embarrassing way when I was in 5th grade by the 2nd grade teacher for “playing” in chapel when I was just rolling up a satin ribbon that wouldn’t stay in my hair so I could put it in my pocket. Fun times. Hopefully that guy has learned to chill out.

Aussie Cardi

Cardigan: Retro Girl
T-shirt: Nordstrom Rack
Jeans: CJ by Cookie Johnson
Shoes: thrifted Cappagello
Lipstick: Revlon Love That Red

My sister Hillary who’s living in Melbourne with her fiancĂ© sent me this cardigan for my birthday, and I love it! Maybe I should have called this post “Aussie Cardy” because reading Australian and New Zealander blogs I’ve noticed that people down under spell the word that way. But it is “cardi” here in the U.S. and “theater” is “theatre” and so on.

Also, I have to say Australians have the best slang. A couple favorite phrases that I’ve learned so far are “technicolor yawn” (vomit) and “flash as a rat with a gold tooth” (ostentatious, flashily dressed). Whenever I imagine this similaic (is that even a word?) gold-toothed rat I start cracking up.

Cheap Frills

Top: thrifted Target Merona
Skirt: thrifted Corey Lynn Calter
Shoes: thrifted Libby Edelman
Lipstick: Revlon Fire and Ice

Hey, another all-thrifted outfit, but I didn’t even notice until I started listing out what I’m wearing here. These photos are from Sunday, when I had brunch with my friends Emily and Vanessa in Silver Lake, L.A.’s hipster district. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It was extremely hot, so hot that I was annoyed that I even have bangs. Sometimes I sincerely wish I could get away with shaving my head.
